Finding Enough Insurance Coverage

When it comes to making sure that your home and family are safe and sound, few things are as important as choosing the right insurance plan. About six months ago, my home burned to the ground, and without the right insurance plan, we would have been toast financially. Fortunately, because we had prepared properly, we didn't have any problems when it came to making sure that we could rebuild our place. This website is here to help anyone who might be struggling with which insurance policy to choose. Check out this blog for great information on finding the perfect policy.

Finding Enough Insurance Coverage

Will Flood Insurance Pay For Mold Remediation?

by Jason Prescott

Having a home flood can be an incredibly stressful experience. Whether you've already experienced flooding or you're in a flood prone area, you should be aware of your insurance coverage. Flooding insurance can be complex and there are things you need to know in advance.

You May Not Have Any Flood Insurance

Unlike fire insurance, flood insurance isn't included in every homeowner's insurance policy. In fact, if you're in an area that has frequent flooding, you're less likely to have flood insurance included. That doesn't mean you're entirely out of luck: you may be able to get aid through an agency like FEMA. However, if you haven't experienced flooding yet, it's important to make sure you have the right insurance.

You May Have a Maximum Limit

Even if you do have flood insurance, there's often a maximum limit for mold remediation. It's also possible that you may need to go through your flood insurance company to get remediation rather than hiring someone and getting reimbursed. All of this makes it very important for you to contact your insurance company before you get any work done, as you don't want to find out later on that it wasn't covered.

Your Home Isn't Habitable With Mold

If you have a serious mold problem, that means your home isn't habitable. In most insurance plans, it will also mean that your insurance company needs to give you a stipend to find temporary housing while the remediation is completed. You can check with your insurance company to find out what your per diem allowance is, which can go either towards long-term rent (for significant repairs) or short-term hotel stays (for shorter repairs).

You May Get a Break If You Had a Plumbing Issue

If your mold remediation was caused by a plumbing issue rather than a flood, then most homeowner's insurance policies will cover it. Homeowner's policies usually have exclusions specifically for natural flooding rather than a "flood" caused by internal plumbing. It's important to be very specific with your insurance agent for that reason.

Though it may seem difficult to deal with mold remediation, it's very important. While many types of mold are harmless, others can be extremely toxic. Even non-toxic mold can eventually lead to aggravated asthma or allergies, and will ultimately lower the air quality of your home and potentially impact the general health of those who live inside of it. Your first step is to talk to an  insurance agent, like Jeffrey Beck Insurance Services.
