Finding Enough Insurance Coverage

The Different Types Of Auto Insurance Coverage

by Jason Prescott

When you first go to purchase car insurance, you may be surprised to find that there are different types of coverage you can purchase. If you were previously under the impression that car insurance was car insurance and most policies were the same, then you'll soon realize you have a lot to learn. Luckily, you can find descriptions of the basic types of coverage below and use them to help guide your purchases.

Property Liability Coverage

This type of coverage is required in most states. It pays for the costs if you damage someone else's property, such as their car or yard, while you are operating your vehicle.

Collision

This is similar to property liability coverage, but it covers your car instead of others' cars. It only applies in the case of a car crash.

Comprehensive

Comprehensive coverage will pay for damage that occurs to your car in situations other than a crash. For example, if a tree branch falls on your car while it is parked, comprehensive will cover it. If there is a hailstorm and your roof gets dented, the insurance company will cover that under a comprehensive policy, too.

Personal Injury Protection

Personal injury protection coverage will pay for any medical bills associated with any accidents that you, the driver, get into. If you have passengers in your vehicle at the time of the accident, this coverage will also pay their medical bills.

Bodily Injury Liability

People often get this coverage confused with personal injury protection since both pay for medical bills. But this type of coverage pays the medical bills of anyone who is in a different vehicle that you happen to collide with. If you were to hit a pedestrian or cyclist, bodily injury liability would come into play there too.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Motorists are required to at least carry bodily injury liability and property liability coverage, but not everyone follows the law! If someone who does not have insurance causes an accident, your own uninsured motorist policy will pay for the damages. This coverage is required in some states, but it is a very, very smart coverage to buy regardless.

Now you should have a better understanding of what each type of car insurance covers. The best auto insurance policies offer all of these types of coverage. If you have an old car worth very little, you may be able to get away without collision and comprehensive, but that's about it.
